Small homeland of the great scientist

It is not a secret for the experts of the life and creative work of the scientist that the most of the childhood of the future professor of Harvard University and the president of the American Sociological Association was held in small settlements of the Komi region, now is part of the Ust-Vum District of the Komi Republic – the villages Gam and Rymia. In the first, young Pitirim Sorokin studied at the advanced grade school, in the second he often spent vacations and free time with his aunt Anissya Rymskikh.

On August 1, the staff of the Center “Nasledie” after Pitirim Sorokin and the Minister of National Policy of the Republic of Komi made a trip to these memorable places.

The first stop took place in Ust-Vym village, where the Minister of National Policy of the Republic of Komi G.I. Gabusheva and the staff of the Center “Nasledie” after Pitirim Sorokin visited the Museum of Local History as well as the Museum Exposition “Izba of Ust-Vym peasant of XIX-XX centuries”. “This makes it possible to visually see and feel in what environment Pitirim Sorokin lived and grew which influenced on his character formation”, notes the director of the Center “Nasledie” after Pitirim Sorokin O.Y. Kuzivanova.

The next point of the trip was Aikino village, where the Round table, dedicated to the forthcoming celebration in the Komi Republic of the 130th anniversary of the birth of Pitirim Sorokin was held. The director of the Center “Nasledie” Olga Yuryevna Kuzivanova, the Minister of National Policy of the Republic of Komi Galina Ivanovna Gabusheva, the staff of the Administration of the Municipal District “Ust-Vymsky” and the Ust-Vymsky Inter-settlement Museum Association discussed options for holding festivities and shared their vision of the specificity of popularizing the scientist's heritage in the small homeland. In Gam village, where the following stop was, there is still a building in which Pitirim Sorokin “entered the path of education that eventually led to a career as a university professor” [quote from P. Sorokin's autobiography "The Long Journey"]. The modern building completely repeats the historical appearance.

Another settlement that is part of the modern Ust-Vym District played a big role in the development of the character of Pitirim Sorokin – Rymia village. At the moment, Rymia is a small village on the shore of the Vychegda River, to which the road leads, along which young Pitirim Sorokin walks in the winter and in the summer in any bad weather to the warm house of his aunt Anissya.

“Visiting such places gives an amazing sense of ownership, helps to better understand the forces that influenced on the formation of the character and personality of Pitirim Sorokin. It is impossible to overestimate the contribution of the Komi region in the life of P. Sorokin, and the forthcoming 130th anniversary of the birth of a sociologist is a good occasion for the popularization of small homeland of a great scientist”, said the Minster of National Policy Galina Ivanovna Gabusheva.
